Artists Raise Money For Victims Of Haiti
Some of the biggest names in UK hip hop, grime and R&B hit the stage on Wednesday night (20 January), to help raise money for the victims of Haiti.
"I think it's important to use your influence to get people to donate money in the name of humanity," said Sway. "At the end of the day, nobody asked us for a natural disaster.
"The people of Haiti, they need our help and whatever way we can help, we help.
"It's a shame that it had to take a natural disaster on the other side of the planet to get all these talented UK artists in one place."
All the stars involved agreed to waive their usual appearance fees so the charity, Ctrl.Alt.Shift, could make as much cash as possible.
Tinie Tempah was there too spitting some bars and said he had to help.
He said: "It's a devastating situation what happened to a nation of people who didn't have anything to begin with, the situation has been made entirely worse.
"I just had to be there and just do whatever I could."
The money raised will go to local organisations who are already distributing emergency supplies in Haiti.
It'll help provide food, tents, hygiene kits, blankets, jerry cans for water, water purifiers and medical support.
Teddy Pendergrass Dies At 59
Teddy Pendergrass, the seductive American rhythm-and-blues singer who continued his recording career after he was paralyzed in a 1982 car accident, has died at the age of 59, media reports said on Thursday.
Pendergrass's son, Teddy Pendergrass II, told the Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper that his father died on Wednesday at a Philadelphia-area hospital. He had undergone colon cancer surgery eight months ago and his son said he had a difficult recovery.
Pendergrass began his career as a drummer but first rose to fame in the 1970s when he became lead singer of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, which had hits such as "If You Don't Know Me by Now" and "I Miss You."
After leaving the Blue Notes for a solo career, he had a string of hit love ballads that were considered musical aphrodisiacs by his fans. His solo hits, notable for his smooth baritone and sensual delivery, included "I Don't Love You Anymore," "Close the Door," "Turn off the Lights" and "Love TKO."
Pendergrass crashed his Rolls-Royce in Philadelphia in 1982 and was left paralyzed from the waist down. He resumed his recording career the next year with the album "Love Language" and returned to the stage by performing from his wheelchair at the Live Aid concert in 1985.
He started the Teddy Pendergrass Alliance in 1998 to benefit victims of spinal cord injuries.
The team of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff wrote and produced many of Pendergrass's hits and Huff recalled the singer's solo debut at a Los Angeles nightclub.
"That night I saw the coming of a superstar," Huff said in an interview with radio station WDAS. "When Teddy walked out on the stage, he didn't even open his mouth and the place went crazy with screaming females. He was just so dynamic and when he started singing, he just blew them away."
AMERICA'S FAVORITE HOUSE MUSIC PRODUCER GETS NOMINATED FOR A GRAMMY
New Jersey based House music producer DENNIS FERRER has just been nominated for a Grammy for his "Dennis Ferrer Objektivity Mix" of Dido's "Don't Believe In Love" (Arista). Talking en route to a gig Ferrer said "I feel honored and lucky at the same time. Very few of us in our genre get the nod of acknowledgement when it comes to being judged in the mainstream." Adding he found out about the nomination this AM when "Carl Craig sent me a text and said "congratulations on your Grammy nomination". I texted him back saying "oh, you've got jokes now". I thought he was talking about my new record. Then he called me saying he was serious and my jaw dropped."
Asked about how he approached the Dido remix Ferrer revealed his usual determined state saying he approached it "like every other one of my records. I made it my own. I've never waivered from what I do."
This rounds out a very strong year for Dennis Ferrer a producer/ DJ/ label boss whose on a mission to increase the quality AND keep the spirit of house music alive. Ferrer started the year as the winner of Beatport's Best Deep House Artist of 2009, and then tore up summertime dance floors with his big piano chord laden hit single "Sinfonia Della Notte" for Strictly Rhythm.
Dennis' year is now ending the year with another hit single, this time it's the vocal driven anthem "Hey Hey" released on his own much respected OBJEKTIVITY imprint.
"Hey Hey" immediately caught on with DJs and with Mixmag UK who gave it a Top Tune review and big UK radio DJ Pete Tong helped the noise too saying the record ‘gives me goose bumps, it’s quality from start to finish; it’s a return to the finest virtues of house music, this is brilliant.' The single is also notable for having received one of the most rapid reactions in recent dance music history - shooting immediately to #1 on Beatport where it's still holding three weeks in something no other house track has achieved recently.
Perhaps part of the appeal here is "Hey Hey" is vocal driven and so it's appropriate that Dennis is now nominated for a Grammy for another vocal driven tune. But vocals aren't all that's appealing with "Hey Hey" it's been drawing attraction for the superb production standards - something Dennis made even clearer when he decided to reveal part of the technical process behind the tune on his myspace blog (and single press release) - Resident Advisor's reviewer commented - "even a novice like me can often hear how ridiculously sharp his productions are."
Dennis recently described the genesis of his new single to Chicago's Five Magazine saying "I was thinking about when you used to hang out with your friends back in the day and some guy would call on some girl, and most of the time she wouldn't give him the time of day. But on occasion you get that one shot where somebody would pay you some mind Then a couple of years later you go, "Damn I hate this bitch!" or "Screw this fucking guy!" [laughs] That's where the record comes from. We've all been at a certain point where you sit there and regret what you've done. "And I heard you say, I knew I should have walked away..."

History
Southport Weekender is a twice yearly music festival that attracts a 5000 capacity crowd to the indoor Pontins holiday complex in Southport, North West England. Having evolved from it's beginnings as a soul music weekender, the 21 year old event now stands as the most musically diverse music weekender in the U.K. calendar.
An intimate crowd of dedicated dancers and discerning music lovers will be your companions at the event, which features four purpose built arenas featuring state of the art production and sound, each covering a different strand of music.
From the R&B, soul and hip hop of The Funkbase and the main room dance sounds of The Powerhouse, to the soul aficionados Connossieurs' Corner and the eclectic styles of The Beat Bar, Southport Weekender will treat you to a feast of the world's leading DJ talent, accompanied by party starting live acts and guest PAs.
Unlike many three day events Southport Weekender provides warm, comfortable accomodation, in the form of self catering apartments, for each of their attendees. As this is included in the ticket price it's a strong argument for Southport being the best value for money weekend event around.
Our site, which is five minutes walk from the beach and only a short distance from the coastal town of Southport, is also equipped with go cart racing, a swimming pool, 24 hour alcohol license and is tried and tested as the perfect party location.
Don't miss out! Why not feel free to ask any of our many thousand dedicated forum members what makes Southport Weekender an event that they all have to keep coming back to time after time. Just be prepared - if you come once, you may never miss another!
Whitney's comeback tops the charts.
Whitney Houston's comeback record has topped the Billboard album chart with sales of 305,000 copies.
I Look To You, her first studio album since 2002, chalked up the biggest week one sales of her career and the biggest of any female artist so far this year. Its release sees Houston return to the public arena after a prolonged period of personal and professional turmoil.
The singer visited London earlier this year to preview her new tracks, which include the single Million Dollar Bill.
The album - which features collaborations with Alicia Keys and R Kelly - is released in the UK on 19 October.
Speech Debelle wins Mercury Music Prize
Rising hip-hop star Speech Debelle has won the prestigious Mercury Music Prize for the best British album of the year.
Her debut Speech Therapy, released in June, has not appeared in the UK album chart, but its sales are expected to get a huge boost from her win.
The 26-year-old, from south London, beat contenders including La Roux and Kasabian to win the £20,000 prize.
She said afterwards that her win proved "if you believe in something and you think you can do it, you can". She added: "I feel so good, it feels better than I imagined."
She said she hoped her album, on which she raps and sings, and which relies heavily on jazz and soul as well as hip-hop, had thrown a "real wrench" into the music business.
"There's a lot of music that sounds the same, all day on the radio," she told journalists. "Hopefully people will hear this album and realise they don't have to make music that sounds the same - they can make music that sounds good."
She is the prize's first female winner since 2002, when Ms Dynamite picked up the trophy.
Basement Jaxx plans rare DJ tour of U.S.
Basement Jaxx, the dance music duo responsible for some of the most infectious dance-floor-filling anthems of the past decade, will follow the release of its latest studio album with a series of rare North American DJ dates this fall.
The DJ tour will kick off October 30 in San Francisco and play the HAR Haunted Mansion party in Los Angeles on Halloween before heading to Toronto, Chicago and New York in early November.
"Scars," the group's fifth album, and first to be co-released by Ultra Records and XL, is set for release October 6.
Jaxx's Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe enlisted a roster of notable collaborators for their latest project, among them Yoko Ono, Kelis and Santigold.
The duo also has recorded an as-yet-untitled set of "Pink Floyd-y, more ambient-y stuff," according to Buxton. "That's going to come out as probably a mini LP afterwards," he said, "more for bath-time music."
As for the band bringing its legendary massive, circus-like live show, which includes an ever-evolving crew of 20 or so singers and dancers, to the United States, Buxton remains noncommittal. "Up to now, we've been in South America and Australia, and then we're going to be in
Calvin Harris seeks collaboration with Robbie
Calvin Harris has admitted that he would like to work with Robbie Williams.
The Scottish producer said the former Take That was highest on his wish list of artists to collaborate with.
Speaking to the Daily Star, he said: "I want to work with Robbie, he's my number one target now.
"I think he's just finished his new album with Trevor Horn though. Maybe he can come help me on my next record instead."
When he spoke to media recently, Harris confirmed that he had been in contact with Williams.
He said: "I did get an email from Robbie Williams the other day, which was just mental.
"He sent me a picture of him, the Spice Girls and Boyzone wearing ridiculous '90s pop outfits and said, 'Please stop being a popstar because you're making us all look bad'. I thought that was a really nice thing to do."
Harris also recently confirmed that he was planning to collaborate with both Katy Perry and Kylie Minogue on their new albums.

Robbie & Whitney to fill in for the King of Pop
Robbie Williams and Whitney Houston are set to take over Michael Jackson's London shows.
The two artists both have new records due out this year, and are being lined up for 23 of the dates the King of Pop, who died of a suspected cardiac arrest on June 25, was due to perform at The O2 arena early next year.
A source said: "Robbie's eagerly-awaited album will be out soon and he is likely to be touring Europe next year. It will be perfect for him to start with shows at The O2.
"Whitney Houston has been on the O2 arena wishlist for a while; she has the voice and hits to sell the arena out several times over."
Michael had been scheduled to play 50 dates at the venue starting earlier this month and stretching into next year.
If the plan goes ahead, 35 year old Robbie and Whitney, 45, could stage shows in January, February and March 2010. They are both expected to play greatest hits sets as well as their new material.
Robbie's upcoming album: Reality Killed the Video Star, hits stores in October, and his manager has already promised fans it will be packed with hits.
It is his first release since 2006's Rudebox, which was savaged by critics.
Whitney's: I Look to You, comes out in August, and is her first new studio LP since beating drug problems.
